Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that this activity become unprofitable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
