Jair Bolsonaro detained after being declared a risk of fleeing

Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The former head of state was sentenced of plotting a military coup in last fall and handed more than 27 years in prison, but he continued under home detention pending court reviews.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after fresh information were revealed.

This involved seeking to disable his tracking device and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the magistrate said information from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his escape.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the protest called by his offspring.

His child, Flávio, who works as a legislator, called for a assembly of his supporters near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your country, or see it all from your phone there on your settee? I urge you to battle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so followers could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the chance of the former president's "relocation to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the investigations revealed a record of organizing to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.

The legal document highlights that the United States embassy in the national capital, Brazil's capital, is situated around 8 miles from the former president's residence.

Worldwide Consequences

His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow populist conservative US President Trump, leading him to impose a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.

The former president is being held in a federal law enforcement building in the capital and will have a detention review on the following day.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.

They also requested that he be permitted to depart his residence for medical treatment, saying he required ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other health problems.

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was determined responsible of orchestrating a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the national vote to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a scheme which encompassed plans to assassinate Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been overseeing the former president's case.

The scheme was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the backing of the army and air force commanders. Lula was sworn in without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, numerous Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed public facilities in the federal district, Brazil's capital.

The security forces intervened and around 1,500 people were detained.

The justices found that the rioters had been encouraged by him whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.

At the time, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also prohibited from running for public office until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the end of his sentence.

The ex-leader called the trial a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the 2026 national vote.
