A recent study indicates that individuals who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a major health publication points out that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users purchasing such treatments need to be aware of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.
Comparing Treatments
The study, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.
Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a less rapid creep back—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Experts propose the way of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Issue?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.
This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Accounts
People who have stopped the jabs describe a sudden return of cravings.
"It felt as if something that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," described an individual.
This difficulty is worsened if users have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts caution that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated behavioural changes.
