Federal Reserve Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year during economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The decision to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs added to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The figure of positions created to the economy in August was lower by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s employment data in early October, it halted its publication when the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, which he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are going up, albeit gradually. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
